World Book Day 2011
Open your child's imagination. Open a book.
We were delighted to celebrate World Book Day in St. Louis Infant School on March 4th. This has become an annual event in the school to promote the enjoyment of books and reading. In the week running up to the event the children were provided with lots of opportunities to have a story read to them and to experience handling lots of books for themselves. In this way they were encouraged to explore the pleasure of books and reading.Every year the event has grown bigger and better and this year was no exception. All classes put in a great effort to surround the children with a wide variety of books and activities which were enjoyed by all.

Activities included reading big books and little books, drawing or colouring pictures and making characters from books in art and craft. The Gingerbread Man was a popular story in Senior Infants and the children followed this up by colouring pictures and also decorating gingerbread with icing. The sly fox wasn't the only one who managed to eat The Gingerbread Man!!!
With the arrival of World Book Day, the school was a buzz of excitement as children arrived into class dressed up as their favourite storybook character. Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz was seen bounding down the corridoor in her red shoes closely followed by Jack and his magic beans. Goldilocks made sure to keep well clear of the Three Bears after her last encounter with them! Characters from the Mr.Men series were seen around the school with Mr.Angry being especially cross in Room 5. A big congratulations to the parents on the huge effort they put in by getting the children dressed for the day with many mums putting their dress making skills to work and dads' shirts being put to good use.

The afternoon saw the finale to the day with all the children gathered in the P.E.hall to model their costumes. Lego Man proved a big mystery with nobody knowing his true identity. The Oompa Loompas from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory were also very popular especially with their enormous candy bars on offer.
Each child received a book voucher to be redeemed in local book shops. The children enjoyed their day and danced out of school with great tales to tell their parents of the day's exciting adventures and activities.
Many thanks to Ms. Burns for all her hard work organising the wonderful events for World Book Day 2011.
Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.
