Science Week 2021

Science Week is an exciting and innovating annual event which all children in our school look forward to each year. As this event unfolded from the 7th to the 14th of November 2021, all the children in our school were transformed into ‘Little Einsteins’ for the duration of the week as they explored all things Science! The fun-filled events were an ideal way to develop interest in the world around us and at the same time develop the creativity of the children. Science Week gave each of the classes the opportunity to explore and investaigate many areas of the Science curriculum.

We are so fortunate in our school to have a wonderful team of SET teachers which means the children enjoy literacy and numeracy stations in small groups every day. For the duration of Science Week however , some of these stations were replaced with Science stations! This opportunity afforded each child in the class to experience many experiements in an intimate small group setting with the presence of a teacher at all stations.

The children made predictions, carried out experiments and reflected on the outcomes. We saw a broad spectrum of activities ranging from volcanoes erupting, making lava lamps, exploring magnetism and floating and sinking. Children witnessed flowers changing colours while others discovered some very intersting facts about the effects of certain drinks on our teeth. Other experiments included making water filters, water absorption, dancing raisins and the reaction of mixing bicarbonate of soda and vinegar. Lots of giggles were also heard throughout the school when gummy bears began to double in size after being placed in water. Many of the children noted their favourite experiments were making their very own playdoh in Junior Infants and the Senior Infants were thrilled at the prospect of making their own slime, definitely two activities to be tried at home!!

Classess also engaged in some of the online virtual activities hosted by Cavan and Monaghan Science Festival and RTE Hub. The favourites included ‘Science of the Circus’, ‘Make a Boat’, ‘Explore the Microscopic World’, ‘Fur, Feathers, Scales and Tails – Who Am I?’ and the favourite of all The Secret Science of Santa! We would all like to congratulate the Cavan and Monaghan Science Festivla on hosting another wonderful series of events for Science Week.

It was definitely a very busy week here in the Infant School celebrating science in our everyday lives. Some of the children referred to the experiences of the week as ‘magical’ and ‘amazing’ as they looked on in awe at many of the wonderful experiments they engaged in.

Science Week experiences may also be viewed on our Instagram account ‘stlouisinfants’.
